James Morrow has been awarded the Roy Kinnear Award for Scotland's Students Player of the Year at the Scotland Rugby League Player of the Year Awards. The Leeds Met student, who plays for York Acorn ARLFC, has also received a call-up to join the Great Britain Students' team.

Professor Simon Lee has appointed a new Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Leeds Met. Professor Anne Gregory, Director of Leeds Met’s Centre for Public Relations and the UK’s only full-time professor of PR, was appointed last night during the launch of University Centre Calderdale, a HE centre in Halifax which Professor Gregory has been instrumental in setting up.

Following the success of the previous two Carnegie Brass Band Concerts at Headingley Carnegie Stadium, students, staff and friends of the university are invited to a third concert, presented by Yorkshire County Cricket Club in partnership with Leeds Met, which will take place with a performance by the Wetherby Silver Band, in the Long Room at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on Sunday 17 December.

Over 200 final year students came to the ‘Freebies for Finalist’ event to claim a free pack from the Careers Service last week. The packs, containing useful information on graduate recruitment and hundreds of vacancies, flew off the Careers stand with demanding beating supply.

Collaborating with National Trust to build energy-efficient homes - 12/12
The School of the Built Environment ‘Centre for the Built Environment’ (CeBE) is working with the National Trust on the Stamford Brook housing project, a development of 710 new houses on National Trust land at Dunham Massey, near Altrincham, Cheshire. The development is a unique partnership between the National Trust, Redrow Homes and Bryant Homes which will release valuable revenue for the upkeep of the Dunham Massey Estate, in addition to providing much needed housing for the area.

A new Higher Education Centre is to be launched in Halifax as part of a successful partnership between Calderdale College and Leeds Metropolitan University. The new centre will be officially launched on Monday December 11 in the Crossley Gallery at Dean Clough, Halifax.

Carnegie Scholars celebrate - 08/12
Last night sporting success was recognised when 24 Leeds Met students were presented with their prestigious Carnegie Sports Scholarships. The presentation dinner was held in the Lewis Jones Suite in the Carnegie Stand at the world famous Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

Ricky Wilson of the Kaiser Chiefs was amongst Leeds Met alumni who attended the preview evening of the Faculty of Arts & Society end-of-year shows, along with students, families, friends, staff, the media and companies interested in emerging design talent.

Leeds Met third year BA (Hons) Garden Art & Design students, who were awarded a gold medal in the Best Courtyard Garden category for their ‘Garden for Robin’ at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, are amongst the students displaying work at Brunswick as part of the end-of-year shows.

Representatives from 40 schools and colleges in Northern Ireland were shown around the Faculty of Arts & Society’s end-of-year shows during a visit to Leeds Met.

Sports stars continue to shine - 07/06/06
Gymnasts and Carnegie Scholars Steven Jehu, Oliver Kneen and Thomas Rawlinson, all part of the Leeds Met gymnastics club, competed at the British Gymnastics Team Championships in Cardiff as part of the City of Leeds team, which took the silver medal, improving their position from last year’s 4th place.

Leeds Metropolitan University is supporting Jane Tomlinson MBE, who is going to ride a gruelling 4,200 miles across the United States in July and August of 2006. This will be the greatest endurance feat ever to be attempted by someone with terminal cancer. Her aim is to raise over £1,250,000 for UK and American-based cancer and children’s charities.

Great Student Run

Over 1,500 students, staff and alumni from across the country took part in the Great Student Run which was started by athlete Tracey Morris and Leeds Met Chancellor Brendan Foster at Headingley Carnegie Stadium. Over 150 institutions, including schools, further education colleges and 50 universities, were represented by runners. Click here for more photos of the Great Student Run.

James Walsh, from Leeds, was the first man to finish the Great Student Run. Shortly after, in second place, was Leeds Met student Rory Fraser and, in third place, international student Elly Tarus. Ieuan Ellis kept ahead of his colleagues and was the first Leeds Met staff member to finish the run.

Joining the crowds at Headingley Carnegie Stadium for the first Great Student Run were the cast of Emmerdale, members of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Leeds Rugby and students in fancy dress.

Fulford sixth form student Emma Willets celebrated winning the women’s section of the first Great Student Run. Emma was followed by Leeds Met student Hannah Cartwright in second place and Emma Leighton who came third. Leeds Met AU claimed their own victory after becoming the ‘ChampionChip’ team winners.

Summer Prom 2006

Leeds Met hosted its inaugural Summer Prom on Sunday 16 July 2006, at the Graduation Hall on The Acre, in the stunning grounds of the university’s Headingley Campus.

Great Student Run

Over 1,500 students, staff and alumni from across the country took part in the Great Student Run which was started by athlete Tracey Morris and Leeds Met Chancellor Brendan Foster at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

Haile Gebrselassie

Haile Gebrselassie, regarded universally as one of the greatest distance runners of all time, visited Leeds Met, enabling students to rub shoulders with a world-class champion and inspired people to register for our own Great Student Run which took place on Sunday 30 April.

 

Leeds Met Honorary Doctor Dame Kelly Holmes returned to Leeds to attend the Leeds Rugby Community Foundation launch at the Headingley Carnegie stadium as a guest of the university.

 

 

Leeds Met students, staff, family, friends and school students from West and North Yorkshire performed Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo and other musical selections at Dean Clough to an appreciative audience which included Leeds Met Governors.

 

Cloth Hall Court
Alumni of Leeds Law School joined current students, staff and course mentors at Cloth Hall Court on the evening of Wednesday 22 March at a reception to celebrate the Law School’s recent move to the city’s business and legal quarter.

Carnegie World Club Challenge

Australian Super League champions the Wests Tigers took the opportunity to fit in some pre-match training at Leeds Met Carnegie’s world-class sporting facilities, alongside the university’s rugby league first team, in the run-up to the Carnegie World Club Challenge.

International Welcome Party

Students from across the world enjoyed welcome celebrations held by the university, including an International party at Headingley Carnegie Stadium and ice skating in Millennium Square.

 

 

Leeds Met Students’ Union, together with communities around the UK, marked International Holocaust Memorial Day, Friday 27 January.

 

 

Leeds Met's partnership with Northern Ballet Theatre has already created some unusual joint ventures, ranging from health and safety assessments, physiotherapy and performance psychology, to sound and acoustics research with the theatre's orchestra.

 

Headingley Carnegie Stadium

 

Leeds Met Chancellor Brendan Foster and England cricket captain Michael Vaughan joined Leeds Rugby and Yorkshire County Cricket Club in an historic announcement, revealing that part of the recent negotiations over the world-renowned stadium included it being renamed as Headingley Carnegie.

‘Superb’, ‘fantastic’ and ‘a brilliant day’ were some of the words of praise from departing staff and families as the Winter Wonderland Family Party came to a close.

Christmas Carols at Headingley Campus

Students, staff and friends of the university joined together in a celebration of Christmas to sing carols at the Headingley Helpzone on Thursday 15 December, the same day that students enjoyed an International Christmas Party.

Queens Square

As part of Leeds Met's continuing transformation of our Civic Quarter, the School of the Built Environment is the first school to relocate from Brunswick into brand new and refurbished grade two listed facilities in Queen Square.

Messiah

All-comers joined students, staff and friends of the university accompanied Leeds Met’s partner, Black Dyke Band, in a charity performance of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday 4 December.

Everest West Ridge 2006

Leeds Metropolitan University officially launched its partnership with the Army’s Everest West Ridge 2006 expedition, aiding a team of British Army soldiers with fitness, nutrition and psychological support in their quest to become the first Britons to climb the West Ridge of Mount Everest.

Carnegie Premier League

Leeds Met is delighted to be involved in a pioneering partnership with the Irish Football Association. This builds on the success of the university’s sporting partnerships with Leeds Rugby, Bradford City Football Club and the Netball Superleague. 25/10/05
